GE commits $1B for Inga dam rehabilitation and $800M for health infrastructure, representing the largest single American corporate commitment in the DRC.
General Electric has signed a historic $1.8 billion agreement with the DRC government, encompassing two major infrastructure projects: the rehabilitation of the Inga dam complex and a nationwide health infrastructure program.
Inga Dam Rehabilitation ($1 billion):
The Inga dam complex on the Congo River has the potential to generate 40,000 MW of hydroelectric power - enough to supply electricity to much of Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, the existing Inga I and Inga II facilities operate well below capacity.
GE's investment will modernize existing turbines, upgrade transmission infrastructure, and increase generation capacity. This is seen as a precursor to the eventual Grand Inga III project, which would be the world's largest hydroelectric facility.
Health Infrastructure ($800 million):
The health component will fund construction and equipping of hospitals and clinics across the DRC's provinces, addressing critical gaps in the country's healthcare system. The program includes:
This investment is particularly significant following the scaling back of USAID programs in the DRC, which had been the country's largest bilateral health donor.
For investors, GE's commitment signals confidence in the DRC market and creates opportunities in supply chain, construction, and healthcare services sectors.
